Introduction It is a great honour to be asked to contribute an essay to a special issue of Temida devoted to the memory of sadly departed scholar and humanitar-ian Nils Christie. It is particularly fitting that this tribute occurs in the journal Nils Christie begins with the observation that a person's full participation in his or her own conflict presupposes elements of civil law.
